Caged

No more the earth beneath my tread
No more the sleep beneath the stars
No more the wild and panting chase
across the vast unbounded space
For I'm enclosed behind steel bars
No sky above - a roof instead

I was a King once, long ago
Roaming the plain, I roared my might
Antelopes, startled, fled in fear
warned by their instincts I was near
Zebras, gazelles, giraffes took flight
seeing the presence of their foe

Lord of the beasts, I snarl with rage
No longer can I hunt my prey
I'm an exhibit in the zoo
just like the chimp and kangaroo
Stared at by humans every day
queuing to view the king in the cage
