Suspense

The long brown envelope lay on the mat
I knew he'd lecture me when he saw that

I watched him anxiously. He picked it up
then stuck it casually behind his cup

He took another slice of wholemeal bread
and casually plastered it with orange spread

Suspense is terrible. Please, please be quick!
Just how much longer? I felt quite sick

The long brown envelope was opened wide.
Just a bank statement, that's all, inside

A great relief it was because I thought
the long brown envelope was my report!
